Yalla Bahrain! 2008
Once again under the patronage of the Bahrain Economic Development Board a stunning array of events was organised to support the 2008 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix under the now familiar title ‘Yalla Bahrain!’
In order to encourage wider participation at the Bahrain International Circuit, KHP devised the concept of Yalla Bahrain! (Let’s Go Bahrain!) as a series of events and activities that local people could attend and that were not specifically focussed on motor racing. Now in its fourth year, more than 77,000 people attended 2008 Yalla Bahrain! over two months helping to raise public interest in Formula One, and contributing towards another sell-out Grand Prix.
F1 Racing with a Star
F1 Racing with a Star kicked off Yalla Bahrain! in style with a star appearance by Scuderia Ferrari driver Felipe Massa at Bahrain’s social hub, the Seef Mall. A crowd of more than 2000 fans filled the western expansion of the mall to greet the winner of last year’s Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix. In addition the driver autograph signing a Sony PlayStation challenge invited visitors to compete against each other for Formula One prizes.
F1 Football Fives
Following on from its success in 2007 the Yalla Bahrain! calendar saw a return of the five-a-side football tournament F1 Football Fives. Crowds streamed into the Bahrain International Circuit on Public Day of Formula One testing to witness action, drama and a wealth of goals from the 30 team five-a-side football tournament, with almost the entire community in the Kingdom represented among the teams. For those not taking part there was a host of entertainment including a kids entertainment area, football freestyler Daniel Magness, stiltwalkers, giant games, and table football.
F1 Paint Bahrain
Last year a giant collage of images celebrating Formula One in Bahrain dominated the skyline at the Al Aali Mall after more than 80 individual canvasses were painted – this year Bahrain went 2D for F1 Paint Bahrain! Again under the guidance of acclaimed Bahraini artist Abbas Al Mosawi, local schools and universities created more than 40 2D sculptures underlining the unique culture of the Kingdom and the place that Formula One has come to hold in the community. The artistic challenge followed a hectic schedule of workshops across the country and finished with a grand unveiling and public display at the Seef Mall.
F1 Racing Challenge
One of the new additions to the programme of festive and community events supporting the Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix – F1 Racing Challenge – brought together fun, speed and participation. The challenge was to build the fastest – or most interesting – gravity-powered racing car and then compete in a public race. With 25 valiant teams from every corner of the Kingdom of Bahrain launching their soapbox cars down a ramp 8m high and 23m long. The soapbox derby was definitely an event not to be missed!
F1 Drift & Drive-In Movie Night
The Bahrain International Circuit opened its doors for a unique free for all evening of entertainment, drawing a crowd in excess of 4000 people for the F1 Drive-In Movie and Drift Night. The entertainment got of to a roaring start with seven of the regions top drift drivers showcasing some of the finest sideways riding on the island.
If that wasn’t enough for all the adrenaline seekers out there, following on from the drifting mania was a display from one of the UK’s youngest freestyle motocross riders Dave Wiggins and fellow rider Daniel Veal. After all of the adrenalin fueled entertainment from the drifters and free style motocross riders, spectators sat back, relaxed and watched the regional premier of highly-anticipated family movie The Spiderwick Chronicles, followed by 2007 blockbuster Transformers, with action adventure Wild Hogs bringing the evening to a close.
F1 Extreme Stunts Weekend
For the final 2008 Yalla Bahrain! event Bahrain went extreme bringing together fun, music and adrenaline fueled stunts for almost 17,000 people. The extravaganza of entertainment included skateboarding, extreme trial motor bikes and Red Bull freestyle BMX riders. For those brave enough to join in there were breakdancing and skateboarding competitions and for those content with sitting back and watching there was a custom car show, graffiti artists, fire breathers and capoeira dancers.
