KHP and Hockenheimring: 27 Years and counting…
With the Formula 1 summer break now upon us after two back-to-back Grand Prix weekends in Germany and Hungary, KHP has finally managed to catch its breath and look back at what has been a manic few weeks. Unfortunately we didn’t make it along to Hungary this year but the team was present in full force, as we have been since 1985, at the famous Hockenheimring for the 2012 German Grand Prix.
The British ‘summertime’ followed us all the way to south-west Germany, where the weather turned from blazing sunshine to torrential rain and back faster than your average pit stop. Not ideal for the teams who were forced to revise their strategies throughout the weekend but great for motorsport fans. All bets were off.
KHP were in charge of overseeing the media accreditation process in the months leading up to the race weekend. Thanks to our diligent and multi-lingual team, this potentially complex process ran as smoothly as could be hoped for with most of our regular friends in the world of motorsport media – as well as some welcome new additions – arriving at the Hockenheimring Media Centre in good spirits and ready for a weekend of world class racing action.
The Media Centre itself was a hub of activity all weekend where KHP worked alongside FIA and the Hockenheimring team to ensure all facilities – from Wi-Fi to catering – were in full working order and that journalists and photographers were being kept updated with regular bulletins, schedule changes and press releases as the race weekend delivered its usual twists and turns.
Away from the buzzing Media Centre, KHP was busy helping Hockenheimring arrange a series of activities designed to bring the fans closer to their heroes. On both the Friday and Saturday, Pitwalks were arranged with lucky competition winners and the various teams, while in the evenings after the Free Practice and Qualifying sessions had taken place (the latter in torrential rain!) KHP helped to coordinate circuit Taxi Rides. One of the highlights of any Formula 1 race weekend, this is an incredible, exhilarating event which places fans in the passenger seat as the likes of Fernando Alonso, Timo Glock, Vitaly Petrov, David Coulthard and Nick Heidfeld take them on a full throttle lap around the circuit. Some of the KHP team may have even donned a helmet and been taken on a ‘spin’ themselves…
If that wasn’t enough, autograph sessions were held on the Saturday in the main vending area of the Hockenheimring. Former world champions Fernando Alonso, Lewis Hamilton, Jensen Button and Kimi Raikonnen got the crowd warmed up before the home favourites, Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel sent the crowd into frenzy. KHP has looked after many an autograph session down through the years but as receptions go, this was one to behold.
Off-track, the team were also busy helping Porsche prepare for its 20th anniversary celebrations with a media lunch held in the awesome Porsche Paddock on the Friday afternoon. The main celebrations, however, were reserved for that night with a gala dinner made up of former and current Porsche Supercup drivers, VIP guests from the world of motorsport and a celebrity music turn from none other than 90’s legend Haddaway. Once the dinner and speeches were done, the crowd danced into the night as the music took over.
All in all it was another incredible week for KHP at the German Grand Prix in Hockenheim. The hours were long and the schedule packed with meetings, planning and events but that didn’t stop the team from also enjoying some down time at the Porsche Supercup 20th Birthday Party as well as the famous Mercedes Party on the Saturday night. Oh and some chap called Fernando Alonso won the Formula 1 Grand Prix on the Sunday…
